As the number of cyclists in London increases, so do the number of cycle claims. Just as with a car accident, if you are injured in a collision whilst cycling and you believe it was not your fault, you could be eligible for compensation in the form of a personal injury pay-out. London does have a number of cycling black spots, and it’s good to be aware of the cycling claims process should an accident occur whilst riding in the city.

If you are involved in a cycling accident the event is likely to be a real inconvenience, aside from a broken bike, you may find yourself requiring expensive medical treatment. Once you are through the worst, it is only sensible to pursue a cycling claim in the hope of securing financial compensation for your trauma. If found liable, the other party (or their insurance company) will be responsible for restoring your bike and ensuring you are fairly compensated for mental and physical anguish that you have experienced.

The first step in a London cycle claim is to collect evidence to support your case. This perceived ‘hassle’ will be taken away from you by a solicitor and you will be contacted as little as possible as more information is gathered on your behalf. When enough information has been gleaned from witnesses and medical professionals, it is then time to write a letter of claim to the individual or company who you feel is responsible (referred to as the ‘defendant’). The defendant must acknowledge receipt of this claim within 21 days. Once the letter has been acknowledged they then have 3 months to decide whether they will make an out of court payment or they may come back with counter evidence and your lawyer will then respond.

Occasionally, when liability is not agreed upon, a claim will then proceed to court – but most are settled before this.
